Google is revamping Maps to offer more detailed information about national parks in the US, making navigation easier and potentially preventing users from getting lost. When you search for a specific park on Android or iOS, you’ll now see photos and videos of its key attractions, taken by other visitors.
Enhanced features for US national parks
Google Maps will now highlight an entire trail from start to finish when you search for it, rather than just pinpointing its general location. Details regarding the trail’s difficulty and its suitability for walking, running, or cycling will also be available. To further improve the user experience, Google will display reviews of parks and trails, along with useful information such as the nearest public restroom location.
Recognizing that national parks are vast and can be confusing, Google will begin highlighting park entrances later this month, with Maps directing users straight to the trailhead. Additionally, Google will enable users to download offline maps for parks, ensuring that they can find their way even if they lose internet access. Downloadable maps will be available later this month as well.
While these features will initially be available for national parks in the US, Google plans to expand Maps’ usefulness for hikers globally by adding more detailed information for national parks in other countries later this month. For those who wish to virtually explore a park beforehand, Google Street View offers imagery for dozens of national parks.
